Orban Accuses Opposition Parties of Secretly Working with EU leaders

(MENAFN) Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has accused opposition parties in his country of secretly cooperating with European Union leaders to accelerate Ukraine’s accession to the bloc.

He warned that if the pro-Brussels Tisza Party gains power, Hungary could be drawn into a direct confrontation with Russia.

The April 12 parliamentary elections are expected to challenge Orban’s long-standing conservative rule. Throughout his tenure, he has been critical of the EU’s financial and military support for Kiev and of sanctions imposed on Russia, and he opposes Ukraine’s bid for EU membership.

Recent polls suggest a tight race between Orban’s Fidesz party and the opposition, led by former Fidesz member Péter Magyar, who reportedly met with EU officials at a recent international security forum.

“Last weekend, the Tisza Party made a secret pact with Brussels in Munich. Part of this pact includes giving up its veto power, supporting the migration agreement, and accepting Ukraine into the EU. They are following Brussels’ orders and thus dragging us into war,” Orban said during a meeting of Fidesz and its coalition partner, the Christian Democratic People’s Party, which was broadcast on Hungarian television.
