Kremlin Refuses to Engage in Talks with EU's Kallas
Peskov's statement followed Saturday's inaugural three-way negotiations between the United States, Russia, and Ukraine held in Abu Dhabi. European Union representatives have voiced frustration over being sidelined from the discussions, despite the bloc's substantial military and financial contributions to Kyiv.
During a Sunday interview with Russia-1 journalist Pavel Zarubin, President Vladimir Putin's spokesman branded the existing EU leadership as lacking competence, asserting their policies "undermine the system of international relations."
"How can you discuss anything with Kaja Kallas? Neither we will ever discuss anything with her, nor will the Americans, and this is obvious. We can only wait until she leaves," Peskov stated.
He further characterized Brussels as dominated by "semi-literate, incompetent functionaries who are unable to look into the future or understand the realities of today."
Kallas, Estonia's former prime minister, has consistently advocated for stricter sanctions against Russia and expanded military assistance to Ukraine. In 2024, she rejected US President Donald Trump's peace framework for resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict, contending that territorial compromises with Moscow would be "a trap that Putin wants us to walk into."
Recently, Kallas has also challenged Trump's ambitions regarding Greenland, claiming transatlantic partnerships had "taken a big blow" due to his administration's approach.
The EU leadership's uncompromising stance toward Russia has drawn opposition from certain member nations, notably Hungary and Slovakia. Last week, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico likened the EU to "a massage parlor" and demanded Kallas's resignation.
