TRNC Condemns EU Over Greek Cypriot Presidency

(MENAFN) The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) criticized the European Union for allowing the Greek Cypriot Administration to assume the rotating presidency of the EU Council, accusing the bloc of continuing a biased stance that disregards the Turkish Cypriot community.

In a written statement, the TRNC Foreign Ministry said the decision reflects the EU’s long-standing “distorted and one-sided” approach to the Cyprus issue and contradicts the bloc’s own stated principles, according to a news agency.

“The systematic exclusion of the Turkish Cypriot people is not only a political injustice but also a clear contradiction of the European Union’s own fundamental values,” the statement declared.

The ministry recalled that the Republic of Cyprus, established in 1960 as a partnership between Turkish and Greek Cypriots, lost its constitutional framework after attacks on Turkish Cypriots in December 1963. Since then, the internationally recognized administration has effectively represented only the Greek Cypriot side.

Despite this, the EU admitted the Greek Cypriot Administration as a member in 2004—a move the TRNC said turned the bloc into a party to the Cyprus dispute rather than a neutral mediator.

The statement emphasized that the Turkish Cypriot side has consistently demonstrated goodwill toward a resolution, insisting that sovereign equality and equal international status are fundamental to any settlement.

It warned that unless the EU acknowledges past errors and abandons what it described as alignment with maximalist Greek Cypriot positions, it will fail to gain credibility among Turkish Cypriots.

The Greek Cypriot Administration began its six-month rotating presidency of the EU Council on Jan. 1. Ireland is scheduled to take over on July 1.
