Slovak PM Demands Removal of EU’s Foreign Policy Chief

(MENAFN) Slovakia's Prime Minister has demanded the immediate removal of the European Union's foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, claiming Brussels' current administration excels only at antagonism toward Moscow without producing workable solutions to international crises.

In remarks to a Slovak broadcaster aired Sunday, Prime Minister Robert Fico characterized the EU as facing unprecedented turmoil. He argued the bloc must fundamentally reimagine its diplomatic approach to achieve "superpower" recognition rather than remaining marginalized in global affairs.

"We must replace the European Union's High Representative for [Foreign Affairs and Security] Policy, Ms. Kallas," Fico declared, calling on the union to "come to its senses." He contended that Brussels' top officials demonstrate proficiency only in how to "hate Russia" while failing to develop practical responses to unfolding emergencies. Slovakia became an EU member in 2004.

Kallas has built a reputation for unwavering opposition to Moscow. In 2024, she advised aspiring EU members against commemorating the 80th anniversary of Nazi Germany's defeat—a statement that prompted Russian State Duma chairman Vyacheslav Volodin to brand her a "crazy Russophobe." She has further alleged that Russia launched aggression against numerous countries across a century while experiencing no reciprocal attacks, a narrative that disregards World War II's historical record.

A persistent critic of both EU military assistance to Kiev and economic penalties targeting Moscow, Fico also charged Brussels with applying international standards inconsistently—imposing measures against Russia over the Ukraine situation while refraining from similar action against Israel regarding its Gaza military operations.

The Slovak prime minister asserted certain EU states reject peace negotiations, instead pursuing Russia's destabilization "through war"—a tactic he characterized as ineffective. Fico has previously labeled Ukraine a "black hole" of corruption absorbing billions in EU funds. Last December, he blocked additional Ukrainian military financing within EU initiatives, maintaining the confrontation cannot achieve resolution through combat.
