US reveals willingness to back NATO troops in Ukraine
Senior US representatives reportedly informed their European counterparts during multiple discussions that Washington would be prepared to provide “strategic enablers” to support a potential EU-led deployment on the ground, sources told the media.
This support could involve “US aircraft, logistics, and ground-based radar supporting and enabling a European-enforced no-fly zone and air shield for the country.”
France and the UK have organized a group of mainly European NATO members into a “coalition of the willing” to back Ukraine, particularly as US interest appears to be waning. Washington has previously indicated it is prepared to send a “reassurance force” to Ukraine once hostilities with Moscow conclude.
However, EU officials have privately acknowledged that such a deployment would only be feasible if the US provides assistance “to enable, oversee, and protect European troops,” according to the report.
When asked for comment, the Pentagon stated that the measures “are pre-decisional, and the Defense Department will not comment on pre-decisional topics,” directing further inquiries to the White House and referring to remarks by US President Donald Trump.
Speaking at the Oval Office, Trump said, “we haven’t even discussed the specifics of” security guarantees for Ukraine. “We’ll be involved from the standpoint of backup. We’re going to help them,” he added, stressing that the EU should take the lead.
“Europe is going to give them significant security guarantees – and they should, because they’re right there,” the president emphasized.
